A 39 year streak of consecutive victories over Lubbock High came to
a halt at Lowrey Field, as the Westerners outlasted the Rebels 25-23
on Friday night. Lee had no answer for Lubbock's Nathan
Slaughter, who caught 14 passes for 235 yards and scored three
Westerner touchdowns. After taking a 14-13 lead to the locker
room, the Rebels watched their lead slip away in third quarter.
Lee looked to have re-poised themselves early in the fourth, when
Jace Edwards hit Christian Coggan on a 78-yard touchdown to put the
Rebels up 23-19. The Westerners put together their own game-winning
drive, going 69 yards in eight plays. Lee had one last chance
to regain the lead from the 43-yard line with 0:40 left in the game.
Jace Edwards - under heavy pressure - attempted a pass toward the
left sideline, but had it picked off and Lubbock ran out the clock.
Austin Jumper rushed for 118 yards on 19 carries, while Stefan
Watson added 78 yards and a touchdown.
